photography of Claude Gassian at Govinda

JHOCK and I had the pleasure of attending this event on it's opening night. Featuring rare photographs of your favorite rock icons, taken by French photographer, Claude Gassian.

"Govinda Gallery is pleased to present Anonymous, an exhibition of photographs by Claude Gassian. In the early 1970s, Gassian traded his guitar for a 35mm camera and began photographing his favorite musical artists. Over three decades later, he has developed one of the most significant visual archives documenting the icons of contemporary music.

More than simply portraits of well-known musicians and performers, Gassian’s photographs are part of his greater search for that beautiful moment beyond the immediately recognizable. Presented with the obvious celebrity of his subjects, Gassian persists until he catches that individual mood or private thought behind the very public personality. In the process, Gassian captures a feeling that eclipses the subject itself.

Many of Gassian’s images have been used as album covers, and have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers throughout the world. Currently, living and working in Paris, his work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Europe. Featuring approximately fifty black and white and color photographs, Anonymous is his first exhibition in the United States."

Featuring photos of various artists including: Bjork, Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Miles Davis, Eurythmics, Moby, Nick Cave, Ray Charles, Led Zepplin, The Who, AC/DC, Tina Turner, Prince and more.

the BIG art show

the BIG ART SHOW

BIG ART SHOW gives local, unknown, and independent artists an opportunity to perform and display their work to their peers and to the public. Run by a collective of artists and volunteers based out of the Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Brooklyn area, BIG ART SHOW is driven by a passion to create an environment devoid of the pressures and insincerities of the public media.

BIG ART SHOW creates community both locally and nationally by having traveling art events which invite visual artists from any location to display their work, attend the shows, and network with other artists. Similarly, BIG ART SHOW provides an opportunity in which lesser-known musicians can play in front of larger and more varied audiences.

DORI HADAR'S BOOK IS OUT!!! MINGERING MIKE is in stores now!

Hell yes!

In Stores Now!

".. one of the greatest digger discoveries of our time.."
The New York Times

"The book does an excellent job of highlighting what it is about Mingering Mike that elicits both pathos and wonderment: the fact that his creator's funny and bizarre hobby-fantasy is as vivid and affective a document of black cultural experience as the soul music he obsessed over."
BOMB Magazine

"HOT WAX!"
Entertainment Weekly

"The best music we'll never hear."
Tokion

".. one of the more unusual and idiosyncratic bodies of work by a self-taught artist to be uncovered in recent memory."
Folk Art Magazine

"It doesn't matter that none of these albums are real, by the end of the book you feel like you've heard every last song."
The Fader

THIS ALBUM IS SO FUCKING AMAZING. GO AHEAD, TRY IT!

shake, sigh, sway and sing. If you haven't had the pleasure of hearing the sweet vocals and poppy, butterhythmic sounds of Bianca and Sierra Cassidy, then my friends, you are A. Not as cool as I thought you were and B. In for a real treat.

Their new album "The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn" was released today and evokes a languid and playful sense of springtime (should it ever decide to make an appearance). and you know what happens when spring is sprung...

and! it just so happens they're prolly the prettiest thangs on Touch and Go.

For the Environmentalist in You

Come learn how you, too, can affordably reduce your home fossil fuel use by 50-90 percent and so help fight global warming. The Chesapeake Climate Action Network will once again open to the public Maryland's only 95-percent renewable energy household on Sunday, April 29th from 1 – 5 pm. All of the energy changes to the house were made for the cost of just a cup of coffee a day! Plus, there will be a solar food cooker on display (free solar-baked cookies). I find that intriguing.

Satisfy your inner environmentalist.

GRIND HOUSE the movie! released today!!! 04.06.07

Let me break this shit down for you. The long awaited DOUBLE FEATURE "GRIND HOUSE", directed by the masterful minds of Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Eli Roth, is out TODAY! Grind House and Planet Terror, separately but equally, pay homage to the “Grind House” B Movie genre in this double full length tour de force.

What you can expect: perversion, extreme violence, gut busting laughs, great dialogue, blood galore, zombies, and one bad ass car chase.

Starring: Rose McGowan, Rosario Dawson, Kurt Russell, Josh Brolin, Nicky Katt

Not for the faint of heart. At a whopping 3 hours 12 minutes running time, this flick is an all night commitment. If you’re going to the late show like I am, make sure you have a friend in the city who will let you in their bar, post film for a stiff drink.

Still Funny 400 Years Later

Isn't it amazing that 400 years later, we're still laughing at Shakespeare's comedies? Last week "She Stoops to Comedy," Wooly Mammoth's take on Shakespeare's "As You Like It," had me in fits. Cross-dressing, disguised lovers were funny 400 years ago in the first production of "As You Like It" , and the cross-dressing, love-sick players still keep the audience laughing today in "She Stoops to Comedy."

It's playing until April 22nd.

Also, check out the Shakespeare in Washington festival for other cool plays by the Bard going on about town.
