Ah yes... Postings have been a bit thin as of late, though not due to an absence of wonderfully fun and exciting things to do. Alas, I've been doing all of them... and to excess. It also just so happens that the last quarter of the year always manages to kick my ass (in a professional sense), which leaves little spare time for sitting 'round the computer. That said, it is with much sadness that I am taking a wee sabbatical from frequent postings until things calm down a bit. I will still continue to send batch texts and will throw last minute deets up on myspace whenever possible.

Also tonight, Friday August 10th, Velvet Lounge is hosting a benefit show to raise funds for John Stabb, the former singer of one of my all time favorite DC bands, Government Issue. John was assaulted near his home in suburban DC in July and the benefit is to help pay for surgeries that his insurance company won't cover.

The Benefit show will feature: Dave Smalley (ex-Dag Nasty/Down By Law), Marc Ganancias , The Saviors, Pup Tent , Lorelei (Slumberland), Jerry Busher (of Fugazi / French Toast/ All Scars.

There is also an Ebay Auction currently in progress which features items donated to raise money for John's medical fund. Come out and show your support!

My first Bergman experience was watching The Seventh Seal in 1991 in complete darkness in a friends living room. Despite the overtly tragic subject matter, I felt a deep and joyous connection with the film, it's characters and the director's sense of inevitable circumstance. It was the beginning of a long relationship...

"Celebrating Kahlo’s 100th birthday, the exhibition includes the museum’s prized possession, Kahlo’s Self-portrait Dedicated to Leon Trotsky, 23 photographs of Kahlo by various artists, 10 of Kahlo’s unpublished personal letters to family and friends from The Nelleke Nix and Marianne Huber Collection: The Frida Kahlo Papers and 12 never-before-seen photographs of Kahlo’s private bathroom at the Casa Azul. Among the photographs will be a new collection of images by Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide of Kahlo’s private bathroom at the Casa Azul and its contents, which were sealed until fifty years after her death. The combination of these materials will provide a stimulating context for exploring the relationship between Frida’s colorful, mexicanista image and the difficult realities of her personal life."

This series of photographs taken aboard tugboat Nancy McAllister started as a collaboration between photographer Ted Adams and filmmaker/writer Joseph Van Blunk. In Van Blunk's Second Street neighborhood, long famous for Mummers and politicians, the lore and employment provided by the Delaware River waterfont have created a backdrop for residents' lives since the 18th century. Van Blunk himself works as a longshoreman -- and thanks to his brother Bob, Captain of tugboat Nancy, they were able to shoot this series.

The presentation evokes feelings of life on the river rather than the nuts-and-bolts documentation of operating a tugboat, but also provides plenty of material for those who are interested in boats from a technical perspective. Members of the tugboat crew will also be present to answer questions.

Women Directors at the Oscars

“Women Directors at the Oscars” showcases the fine work of the only three women ever nominated for a Best Director Oscar: Lina Wertmüller’s “Seven Beauties” (June 20); Jane Campion’s “The Piano” (July 18); and Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation” (July 11). Also screening is Cristina Comencini’s “La Bestia Nel Cuore (Don’t Tell)” (June 27), which was last year’s Foreign Language Film nominee from Italy. All but Campion are of Italian descent, modern heiresses to the artists featured in the exhibit “Italian Women Artists from Renaissance to Baroque.”

It was 1994. I rememeber the first time I heard Melt Banana. A good friend of mine gave me a tape ( yeah, a cassette) that he thought would rip my skull. The album was called Speak, Squeak, Creak, released on K.K. Null's N.O. label (Tokyo) and on Skin Graft in the US. This was Japanese noisecore before noisecore existed, fronted by an unassuming, petite Japanese girl. She had the stage presence of Godzilla in New York and the atomic, high pitched vocal range of Mothra. This would be Yasuko O. Knowing that I was a diehard Albini disciple, he also threw in that Steve had recorded them. It's a fair bet that my skull was ripped before ever listening to that tape. Needless to say, they blew my mind, both recorded and live. Thirteen years and several albums later, they've never failed to impress. I saw them a couple years ago with Dave Witte (sigh) on drums and it was one of the loudest, most energetic MB shows I can recall.

A Jesus Lizard show was arguably one of the greatest live performance experiences that you could have hoped to attend in the 90's. The bad news: per doctors orders, I can't eat, I can't drink, and I can't swim ...

This Chicago band has been putting out laid-back indie rock since 1993 - a melding of classic 70's sensibility and progressive emo tendancies full of breathy lead vocals. On Thursday morning, I will be making my way back to Mexico City for round two of what is fast becoming a lifelong annual excursion. While I did not take the lovely picture above, this was the EXACT view from our hotel room overlooking the Cathedral at Zocalo Square. Last year, Jason, Jerome and I barely scratched the surface of the City but vowed to return, excitement anew and with venturesome hearts to uncover the "real" D.F. This year, we've got another five brave souls willing to accompany us on our travels.. perhaps next year, you'll come too....
