ON HIATUS!

Ah yes... Postings have been a bit thin as of late, though not due to an absence of wonderfully fun and exciting things to do. Alas, I've been doing all of them... and to excess. It also just so happens that the last quarter of the year always manages to kick my ass (in a professional sense), which leaves little spare time for sitting 'round the computer. That said, it is with much sadness that I am taking a wee sabbatical from frequent postings until things calm down a bit. I will still continue to send batch texts and will throw last minute deets up on myspace whenever possible.

Pay What You Can Performance

"The Unmentionables" by Bruce Norris premiers tomorrow night at the Wooly Mammoth Theatre Company with two nights of pay-what-you-can performances. Other reviewers say its a "breezy take on Americans abroad in the Third World" that exposes their "bourgeois hypocracy." You can read a review of another company's performance in the Times.

black metal vol.1 out today! 08.07.07

"Written by Rick Spears with art by Chuck B.B. and published by Oni Press Twin brothers, Shawn and Sam, aren't your typical kids - sure, their Grim and deep dedication to metal isn't that unusual but their mysterious parentage sure is! Empowered by the legendary sword of Atoll, these kids are determined to thrash and wail on however many demons they have to in order to fulfill the ancient prophecy and regain their rightful position as Hell Baron of the Pit. Loud, fast and heavy like the music it is inspired by, Black Metal ties into the youth culture that has grown up around this ferocious sound. Then infused with a shot of ancient myth and a healthy dose of high adventure, it rises to the level of a truly epic tale."

Look for the Black Metal write-ups in Wizard, Decibel, Revolver and Publishers Weekly!

Ingmar Bergman. RIP. 1918-2007

Ingmar Bergman
07.14.18- 07.30.07

We lost another genius yesterday. For those of you not familiar with his work, I highly suggest queueing up your Nexflix with some Bergman stock. My first Bergman experience was watching The Seventh Seal in 1991 in complete darkness in a friends living room. Despite the overtly tragic subject matter, I felt a deep and joyous connection with the film, it's characters and the director's sense of inevitable circumstance. It was the beginning of a long relationship...

'Would you be president for minimum wage?'

If you have to stay home tonight, you should be watching the CNN/Youtube Democratic Debates.

Democratic presidential candidates faced questions directly from voters on Monday in the first CNN/YouTube debate. One asked about the viability of withdrawing from Iraq, another asked if they would be president for minimum wage and one asked if they had talked about sex with their children.

Voters raise the issues of gay marriage, how to end the war in Iraq, how to better education and whether race was an issue in the response to Hurricane Katrina in the form of videos they shot of themselves and posted on YouTube.

MEXICAN INSTITUTE OF SOUND

So I beat my New York Times theif to the paper this past Sunday, and I'm very glad... it tipped me off to Camilo Lara's second album, Pinata, under the moniker Mexican Instute of Sound. Layering disparate sources of Mexican music and voice samples, he reaches the Essence of The Groove which is urban and folk at the same time.

The SHow IS THE RAINbow 08.01

I'm writing this entry based solely on the awesomeness of the first 35 seconds of The Show Is the Rainbow's "gothic cajun". If a computer wanted to impart Wisdom in high pitched and highly composed beats, but also wanted you to have a party, it would produce the very same 35 seconds of music. And the next 111 seconds ain't bad either.

Come check them out at increasingly what it seems DC does best - the enigmatic and elusive house/abandoned space party, this time presented by Civilian Art Projects, at

1644 North Capitol Street

Wednesday, August 1, 8-11pm

A $2 donation pays for the band and "refreshments", although I say don't be cheap, I'm sure the band and the efforts of Civilian are worth more than that.

OPENS TODAY!!!

Frida Kahlo: Public Image, Private Life. A Selection of Photographs
and Letters
July 6, 2007 - October 14, 2007

"Celebrating Kahlo’s 100th birthday, the exhibition includes the museum’s prized possession, Kahlo’s Self-portrait Dedicated to Leon Trotsky, 23 photographs of Kahlo by various artists, 10 of Kahlo’s unpublished personal letters to family and friends from The Nelleke Nix and Marianne Huber Collection: The Frida Kahlo Papers and 12 never-before-seen photographs of Kahlo’s private bathroom at the Casa Azul. Among the photographs will be a new collection of images by Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide of Kahlo’s private bathroom at the Casa Azul and its contents, which were sealed until fifty years after her death. The combination of these materials will provide a stimulating context for exploring the relationship between Frida’s colorful, mexicanista image and the difficult realities of her personal life."

SICKO in theaters now.

I know this came out last week, but I've been preoccupied with all of the things I constantly write about.

"If you want to stay healthy in America, don't get sick. Following on the heels of his controversial, award-winning features Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine, director Michael Moore sets out to investigate the American health care system, and the 45 million Americans who have no health care despite living in the richest country on earth. Sticking to his tried-and-true one-man approach, Moore sheds light on the complicated medical affairs of individuals and local communities alike—and is every bit as illuminating as in his previous films."

The French say: "Electro-mix happy hour" 07.28

i.e., good music & drinking with redeeming qualities such as super-sweet cutting-edge dance performances by a member of CityDance ensemble, Kyra Green.

Come out to Eyebar (1716 I Street NW) on Thursday (pre-Modernist Society!) to mingle with the most charming of all accented-English-speakers, the French.

I asked my friend Sylvain, who is the founder & coordinator of these events, what made an ipod battle (part of the evening's festivites) so special - we've had them here before... To which he replied that this ipod battle was being conducted by "fancy-naked francophones". Judging from his grasp of English, I don't this they will actually be naked, but they will definitely be fancy.

dylanesque. bryan ferry. new music tuesday! 06.26.07

he's an icon.
he is also an icon.
Bryan Ferry, the unassuming perfection of Dylan personification...The Roxy Music fans of the eighties never would have never imagined the hip, dance, stylized vocals could convey political disillusion so well... It's like Ferry is singing in the closet, only to be discovered by us! looking down upon him, crosslegged on the floor with a microphone and a 45. Sheepish and adoring... singing his heart out. Its what we've always wanted. The perfect amalgamation of early eighties synth-rock-sound with the desparate bleat of the beat of sixties frustration and call for awareness. It's two great tastes that taste great together.

new music tuesday. BAD BRAINS!!!!!

i hate assholes. I hate people that feel so bad about themselves that they have to hate on you. those people are the polar opposite of bad brains.

brains.
you've empowered me since I was a wee lass.
was it 14?? 13? when you came into my life and destroyed every perception of hardcore that I had come to know? Everything strong, everything that couldn't be expressed in words, was felt with a dr. know riff and the knowing, heart wrenching vocals of HR. you soothed me. to this day, I wince at "Youth are Getting Restless, live at the Paradiso"... feeling all of the angst and joy and pain that I knew you had endured; you were my youth and you were my future.

the brains are back.

"Build a Nation is the eighth proper full-length studio album from hardcore punk and reggae pioneers Bad Brains. Produced by Ad Rock of the Beastie Boys & released on June 26, 2007.

Along with being available on CD the album will also be released on a yellow, green, and red multi-colored vinyl record."

JUNE PHOTO NIGHT OUT
FEATURING TED ADAMS and JOSEPH VAN BLUNK

8:00 PM, Thur., June 28, 2007
This series of photographs taken aboard tugboat Nancy McAllister started as a collaboration between photographer Ted Adams and filmmaker/writer Joseph Van Blunk. In Van Blunk's Second Street neighborhood, long famous for Mummers and politicians, the lore and employment provided by the Delaware River waterfont have created a backdrop for residents' lives since the 18th century. Van Blunk himself works as a longshoreman -- and thanks to his brother Bob, Captain of tugboat Nancy, they were able to shoot this series.

The presentation evokes feelings of life on the river rather than the nuts-and-bolts documentation of operating a tugboat, but also provides plenty of material for those who are interested in boats from a technical perspective. Members of the tugboat crew will also be present to answer questions.
