Ingmar Bergman. RIP. 1918-2007
Ingmar Bergman
07.14.18- 07.30.07
We lost another genius yesterday. For those of you not familiar with his work, I highly suggest queueing up your Nexflix with some Bergman stock. My first Bergman experience was watching The Seventh Seal in 1991 in complete darkness in a friends living room. Despite the overtly tragic subject matter, I felt a deep and joyous connection with the film, it's characters and the director's sense of inevitable circumstance. It was the beginning of a long relationship...

'Would you be president for minimum wage?'
If you have to stay home tonight, you should be watching the CNN/Youtube Democratic Debates.
Democratic presidential candidates faced questions directly from voters on Monday in the first CNN/YouTube debate. One asked about the viability of withdrawing from Iraq, another asked if they would be president for minimum wage and one asked if they had talked about sex with their children.
Voters raise the issues of gay marriage, how to end the war in Iraq, how to better education and whether race was an issue in the response to Hurricane Katrina in the form of videos they shot of themselves and posted on YouTube.

WEDNESDAY . JULY 25
nonchalantly sequenced melodies & noise:
Mark Williams + Richard Chartier
once a month (last Wednesdays) we present a quite laid back evening of lost and forgotten music, ambient sounds, electronic whatnot, low brow tunes, dark covers, b-sides, electric squiggles, bloopy unusual-ness, blatant obviousness, avant garde obscurities, bubblegum oddities, punk fun, unintentional hits and very intentional misses... and other seemingly unrelated genre crossing nonchalantly sequenced.

New music Tuesday... On Friday.
MEXICAN INSTITUTE OF SOUND
So I beat my New York Times theif to the paper this past Sunday, and I'm very glad... it tipped me off to Camilo Lara's second album, Pinata, under the moniker Mexican Instute of Sound. Layering disparate sources of Mexican music and voice samples, he reaches the Essence of The Groove which is urban and folk at the same time.

The SHow IS THE RAINbow 08.01
I'm writing this entry based solely on the awesomeness of the first 35 seconds of The Show Is the Rainbow's "gothic cajun". If a computer wanted to impart Wisdom in high pitched and highly composed beats, but also wanted you to have a party, it would produce the very same 35 seconds of music. And the next 111 seconds ain't bad either.
Come check them out at increasingly what it seems DC does best - the enigmatic and elusive house/abandoned space party, this time presented by Civilian Art Projects, at
1644 North Capitol Street
Wednesday, August 1, 8-11pm
A $2 donation pays for the band and "refreshments", although I say don't be cheap, I'm sure the band and the efforts of Civilian are worth more than that.

Well, it's cause it's from the mind of the multi talented John Baizley of Baroness who's contributed art for the likes of Kylesa, Municipal Waste, & Daughters to name a few...).

Frida! A selection of Photos & Letters at NMWA
OPENS TODAY!!!
Frida Kahlo: Public Image, Private Life. A Selection of Photographs
and Letters
July 6, 2007 - October 14, 2007
"Celebrating Kahlo’s 100th birthday, the exhibition includes the museum’s prized possession, Kahlo’s Self-portrait Dedicated to Leon Trotsky, 23 photographs of Kahlo by various artists, 10 of Kahlo’s unpublished personal letters to family and friends from The Nelleke Nix and Marianne Huber Collection: The Frida Kahlo Papers and 12 never-before-seen photographs of Kahlo’s private bathroom at the Casa Azul. Among the photographs will be a new collection of images by Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide of Kahlo’s private bathroom at the Casa Azul and its contents, which were sealed until fifty years after her death. The combination of these materials will provide a stimulating context for exploring the relationship between Frida’s colorful, mexicanista image and the difficult realities of her personal life."

SICKO in theaters now.
I know this came out last week, but I've been preoccupied with all of the things I constantly write about.
"If you want to stay healthy in America, don't get sick. Following on the heels of his controversial, award-winning features Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine, director Michael Moore sets out to investigate the American health care system, and the 45 million Americans who have no health care despite living in the richest country on earth. Sticking to his tried-and-true one-man approach, Moore sheds light on the complicated medical affairs of individuals and local communities alike—and is every bit as illuminating as in his previous films."
SICKO is now showing at Landmark's Bethesda Row AND E Street Cinemas.
