Blades of Glory! out this Friday! 03.30.07
I was trying to organize some kind of group outing on this one, followed up by downing a slab of ribs-n-sauce at Glory Days (duh.) BUT! As luck would have it, work's been kicking my ass and my coordinating skills have been at an all time low. Nevertheless, you shouldn't let that stop you from inviting me to a matinee and some meat on a stick.

That's what I would have called our 3-month focus on Japanese programs/culture/science/music/theater at the Smithsonian. I guess that didn't go over well... But if you want to check out Japan WOW! Opening Concert and Reception this Saturday, let me know. (Featuring a mix of ambient and traditional Japanese music, followed by reception with sushi in the Rotunda) I have one, maybe two free tickets. Email me by Tuesday.

Critical Exposure
Look through the eyes of students as they document their experiences in public schools.
Critical Exposure is an national organization dedicated to using students' documentary photography and first-person narrative to build public demand for quality education and to support campaigns to secure more resources for all public schools.EXHIBIT & RECEPTION - MARCH 22nd
Come see the first exhibit of D.C. students' photographs and writing. Look through the eyes of D.C. youth as they document their struggles and their aspirations. Middle and high school students from several different local youth organizations have photographed and written about issues impacting their lives, including education and employment opportunities, as well as challenges facing young parents.
The ARTiculate Gallery is one of the city's only youth art galleries. Meet the photographers and see their work. (The nearest metro stop is Farragut North.)
weekend recap and shout outs!
I know, I know, it seems as if I’ve been away for an eternity, but in all actuality, it’s only been four days since my last posting. Before I get into too many details about everything that’s going on at the end of the month and into April, I wanted to briefly recap this weekends events and say thank you to a few people….
It’s not often that I stay at any single event for too long. Friday night was a rare exception. Djs Yellow Fever and Co’s. Hosiery party came correct, BYOB style. This is the evening that I discovered that the Safeway on Georgia by the Wendy's doesn't sell booze, but I was quickly directed to the liquor store across the street that had the usual stash to choose from. This was also the night that I discovered that Mad Dog 20/20 made "Purple Rain" flavor. I stood in awe for a second, debated grabbing the Sour Apple flavor (which is damn good!), debated grabbing both and then decided on the bottle of Purple Rain. This was met with "hooo-eee's" and "damn GIRL"'s from the guys who were hanging out in the store. I met up with a couple peeps at Pharmacy and we were off. Who knew that I was going to show up with three of the best dancers in the house? Murph and A.O. were tearin that shit up til at least 4:30 when we decided that food was well in order... The night ended (as so many fine nights do) at the Diner over burgers, mac n cheese and some pretty Sawful conversation. To the Hoisery crew, thanks for keepin it live. To Murph, Seb and the gang, thanks for showin a girl some new moves.
saturday night's alllllright!
dudes. I'm stoked. Saturday afternoon, after brunch at Pharmacy, I got my shit overhauled. seriously. A quick trip up to Chevy Chase to visit Big Daddy Shawn at City Bikes proved to be one of the highlights of my weekend. New tubes, tires, lights, a sweet new lock, a full tune up and the courage to take it to the streets. I was wise enough NOT to do this on Saturday night (which for those of you who don't remember, was St. Patty's Day). nope, we continued J HOCK's birthday weekend from the Cat to the Nine and oh, what a lovely evening it was. To Girl Andie, thanks for the veggie sandwich. To Patrick, thanks for the beers. To Shawn, thanks for pimpin my ride.
and last but not least...
Sunday.Sunday.Sunday.
My first ride in city traffic was a complete success. I only "almost" got hit once and by my accounts, that's pretty damn good. Destination: Pharmacy Bar (yes, again) for brunch and I didn't realize until after I got there, that this would be my initiation into drunk ridin. Side note* Who knew that the hottest dance moves could be found within the frames of the weekly Prince Valiant strip?! Git Low, Git Low! Oh, I forgot how fucking fun brunch at my favorite bar could be. To Kiki, thanks for the salad and the 411 on the 86'ed items. To A.O., thanks as always for the laughs and drinks. To Sadsack, thanks for keepin my Toddy Hot. To Shawn, thanks for the Mind Eraser. and last but not least, to Francis Bacon Bikini the Third, thanks for the two hour text message marathon. I'll see you in the battlelands.

art, booze and nudity
first, i must thank brightest young things, my newest girl crush, for pointing out this lascivious event which brings together two of my favorite things: booze and boobs.
according to the website, the event is "the third in a highly successful and honest presentation of erotic art ranging from representational and abstract work of the human form, to provocative shapes found in nature. The viewer will find the work is presented in all media of 2D and 3D art. The Opening Reception will feature artists using nude models (3 couples) as their canvas, after which the painted models will assume poses on pedestals located in the main gallery. This theme will be repeated at other times during the exhibit."

International Women's Day: Dinner & a Shortstack 03.08.07
Maestro, a little history if you please:
International Women's Day ('IWD') is marked on 8 March every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. Started as a political event by the Socialist Party of America in 1909, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries (primarily Russia and the countries of former Soviet bloc). In some celebrations, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their sympathy and love to the women around them - somewhat similar to Western Mother's Day and Valentine's Day mixed together. (When I witnessed this in Italy, this meant a heck of a lot of flowers given by men of all ages to women of all ages.) In others, however, the political and human rights theme as designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. The IWD is also celebrated as the first spring holiday, as in the listed countries the first day of March is considered the first day of the spring season.

DISMEMBERMENT PLAN. WSO! 04.28.07
reposted from DCist:
BREAKING: YOU ARE INVITED
Let's get right to it: The Dismemberment Plan is reuniting for one night only, and tickets went on sale LAST NIGHT at 5 p.m. (via TicketMaster and the Black Cat).
It's been announced on the band's website, and both Pitchfork and the City Paper are reporting the news (the CP is helping to organize the concert, in fact). In other words: don't take getting a ticket for granted.
A Dismemberment Plan reunion has been a hoped-for and talked-about possibility since their final — and, I can attest, unbelievably great — show in 2003. What's brought the band back together? A good cause, of course. As part of the DeSoto Records family it only makes sense that the Plan would pitch in to help raise money for Callum Robbins. All proceeds from the show will be going toward helping Cal's family cope with his medical condition.
A great cause and a legendary D.C. band — there's not much more to say. The show's at the Black Cat on Saturday, April 28, and will set you back $15.
