Wyclef Jean at Millennium Stage

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presents an evening of free concerts by multi-platinum Grammy award-winning, hip-hop sensation Wyclef Jean; reggae recording super-star Shaggy; the legendary Jamaican ska group The Ska-Talites; and the Richmond-based jazz-funk band Plunky & Oneness on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. This special outdoor event precedes the annual D.C. Caribbean Carnival, and will take place on the Kennedy Center's South Plaza Stage.

The Kennedy Center South Plaza will open at 5:00 p.m. Capacity on the South Plaza is limited. Access is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Lawn chairs welcome. Rain or shine.

Hitchcock at the National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery presents three films from the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, whose portrait appears in the new exhibition “Harry Benson: Being There.”

“Shadow of a Doubt” Thursday, June 21 7 p.m. Is Teresa Wright’s beloved Uncle Charlie, played by Joseph Cotten, the Merry Widow serial killer? Hitchcock’s direction of Thornton Wilder’s screenplay injects real terror into smalltown life. A discussion with author Tappan Wilder follows the screening.

“Strangers on a Train” Friday, June 22 7 p.m.Hitchcock delivers murder, blackmail, and Oscar-nominated cinematography in this 1951 thriller. A conversation with Geoffrey O’Brien, historian and author of “Castaways of the Image Planet” follows the screening.

“To Catch a Thief” Saturday, June 23 2 p.m.The classic Hitchcock caper stars Cary Grant and Grace Kelly chasing truth, jewelry, and each other around the French Riviera.

Discuss Hitchcock’s Hollywood and the Cool Blondes with NPG historian Amy Henderson after the screening. Screenings and lectures for this series are all located in the Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium at the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture. Admission is free; doors open one half-hour before show time; seating is first-come, first-served.

Free music at Carter Barron Ampitheatre!

The Washington Post sponsors free concerts at the Carter Barron Ampitheatre this summer--the Weekend's Weekend series. The Weekend's Weekend concerts are June 15, 22 and 29 at Carter Barron Amphitheater, featuring reggae, blues and Latin music, respectively.

Reggae night showcases Soldiers of Jah Army, Stryker’s Posse, and The Image Band. Blues in the Night features the The Nighthawks, Tom Principato Band, and Kelly Bell Band. On Latin night, Verny Varela y su Orquesta, Pablo Antonio e la Firm and Visions of JAZZ will be performing.

For these free shows requiring tickets, tickets are distributed on the day of performance at the Carter Barron Box Office, beginning at Noon and The Washington Post at 1150 15th St, NW beginning at 8:30 am (4 per adult).

It was 1994. I rememeber the first time I heard Melt Banana. A good friend of mine gave me a tape ( yeah, a cassette) that he thought would rip my skull. The album was called Speak, Squeak, Creak, released on K.K. Null's N.O. label (Tokyo) and on Skin Graft in the US. This was Japanese noisecore before noisecore existed, fronted by an unassuming, petite Japanese girl. She had the stage presence of Godzilla in New York and the atomic, high pitched vocal range of Mothra. This would be Yasuko O. Knowing that I was a diehard Albini disciple, he also threw in that Steve had recorded them. It's a fair bet that my skull was ripped before ever listening to that tape. Needless to say, they blew my mind, both recorded and live. Thirteen years and several albums later, they've never failed to impress. I saw them a couple years ago with Dave Witte (sigh) on drums and it was one of the loudest, most energetic MB shows I can recall.

While I did not take the lovely picture above, this was the EXACT view from our hotel room overlooking the Cathedral at Zocalo Square. Last year, Jason, Jerome and I barely scratched the surface of the City but vowed to return, excitement anew and with venturesome hearts to uncover the "real" D.F. My lovefest with the Bard continues. This Friday starts Shakespeare Theatre Company's Free for All -- a week and a half run of Love's Labour Lost at the Carter Barron Ampitheatre in NW. If you'd like to attend with Leatha Weapon, I'm heading to the Friday, June 1st performance. It should be an interesting play--it begins with King Navarre and three of his noblemen renouncing the world's pleasures—especially women—for the world of academia. We shall see how well that works out!

Olney Theater Gala 2007! 06.16.07

The Olney Theatre Center Performance Hosts are pleased to invite you to the Olney Theatre Center's Gala 2007 on Saturday, June 16th beginning at 7 pm. This is a great opportunity to network with Montgomery County's newly elected leadership while supporting the arts in our community.

Gala 2007 will begin with a cocktail reception at 7 pm in the facility's new lower lobby prior to the show, hosted by Gala Co-chair Catherine Leggett and her husband, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett.

The show will begin at 8 pm, featuring performers and songs from some of Broadway's most popular shows, including Wicked, Godspell, Working, Pocahontas and more. Performers include Tony Award winner Debbie Gravitte (Best Featured Actress In A Musical for JEROME ROBBIN'S BROADWAY) and Liz Callaway, voice of Kiara in Lion King II: Simba's Pride and Jasmine in Aladdin and the King of Thieves and Return of Jafar as well as a Tony Award nominee for her role in Baby.

All guests are invited to return to the lobby after the performance for a sumptuous dessert and coffee. Dress is "creative black tie."

the hirshhorn is my favorite place in the city, so you can imagine how excited i am when i get to combine my favorite place, with my favorite things (music and booze, baby). the goal of this after hours: view the art, dont just stand by the d.j. in line for yet another drink (as if i were at any bar in the city).

late night viewing of german artist wolfgang tillmans photography will be accentuated by music from new york d.j. spencer product. and remember, this is interactive so you can leave your thoughts and impressions for the audio scrapbook.

Exploring the duality in Japanese art today, Transformer Gallery is partnering with Shigeko Bork Mu Project to present "Big in Japan" a cross-town collaborative exhibition featuring a diverse array of contemporary Japanese artists who interpret and respond to the tradition and popular culture of Japan.

Shigeko Bork Mu Project presents Meditation Rooms featuring Yumi Kori and Shinji Turner-Yamamoto, whose works uniquely incorporate ancient Japanese tradition and contemporary culture. Transformer presents Not Only A, But Also B - featuring work by Aki Goto, Misaki Kawai, Chikara Matsumoto, Kazuyuki Takezaki, and Soju Tao (pictured on Transformer website), each embodying the tensions affecting a new generation of contemporary artists in Japan. Not only A, But Also B is guest-curated by Atsuko Ninagawa, curator, and partner of TAKEFLOOR404&502, Toyko, Japan.
